Illinois awarded $22.8 million from feds for rural internet

Illinois received just one of 68 awards of federal money to extend high-speed internet to rural areas in the first round of funding decisions, according to a report released Wednesday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has completed the first of two rounds of project approvals for the $2.5 billion appropriated by the Recovery Act, also known as the stimulus package, for expanding rural access to broadband internet.
